"You'll Weep for Abandoning Party" - Labour Party Lawmaker Warns Defecting Colleagues

Nigeria's House of Representatives saw four members of the Labour Party (LP) make a dramatic switch to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmakers Chinedu Okere from Owerri Municipal/Owerri North/Owerri West Constituency, Mathew Donatus from Kaura Federal Constituency of Kaduna, Akiba Bassey from Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Constituency, and Esosa Iyawe from Oredo Federal Constituency, Edo—cited internal conflicts within the LP as their reason for leaving.

George Ibezimako Ozodinobi, the Deputy Minority Leader of the House and an LP representative from Anambra, expressed his disappointment with the defectors.

During a plenary session, he invoked a biblical reference to convey his message: “I am telling those who have defected that they will continue weeping for themselves because where you have crossed over to, you don’t have a future.”

The Labour Party's spokesperson, Obiora Ifoh, also condemned the defections, describing them as "irrational, untenable, inconsistent and alien to all known norms for which democracy stands for."

He announced that the party would pursue legal action against the defectors, aiming to reclaim their mandates in accordance with the 1999 constitution and the amended 2022 Electoral Act.
