Heavy security was deployed on Wednesday at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja as Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, arrived for his arraignment.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had charged him with an alleged N110 billion fraud. The court premises were heavily guarded by armed EFCC operatives, ensuring all roads leading to the location were secure.
Bello, dressed in a white Babanriga and smiling, entered the courtroom amidst chants of "Saaki" from his supporters and political aides. Contrary to some reports suggesting he voluntarily submitted himself, EFCC officials clarified that he was apprehended by their tactical operatives after substantial intelligence gathering. The former governor had been declared wanted by the EFCC in April 2024 after evading several invitations for questioning.
Justice Maryann Anenih was expected to preside over the arraignment proceedings. The case has drawn massive public attention due to the magnitude of the alleged financial misconduct and the high-profile nature of the accused.
