Former Kogi state Governor, Yahaya Bello has been advised to appear in court on Wednesday to address a ₦80.2 billion money laundering case.
Despite being summoned for arraignment five times, Bello has consistently evaded court sessions, leading to a warrant for his arrest.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been in a prolonged battle with Bello over the alleged fraud.
A source close to the EFCC revealed that Bello’s appearance at the Federal High Court in Abuja is crucial for him to take his plea regarding the 19-count charges filed against him.
"The only saving grace and last opportunity is for him to show up in court on Wednesday, Sept. 25, to take his plea," the source emphasized.
"His delay tactics about taking his plea could only worsen his case."
Bello has missed previous court dates on April 18, April 23, May 10, June 13, and July 17.
The court had issued a warrant for his arrest on April 17, but attempts by EFCC operatives to detain him were thwarted by police interference at his residence in Wuse District, Abuja. Consequently, the EFCC declared Bello wanted.
Justice Emeka Nwite, the trial judge, stated that proceedings would continue despite an appeal filed by Bello before the Court of Appeal. The court has now adjourned the matter till September 25 for arraignment, marking what many see as Bello's final chance to comply with legal procedures.
Bello's media aide, Ohaire Michael, asserted last week that the former governor is ready to honor the EFCC invitation to clear his name, claiming he has nothing to hide. However, the EFCC turned him away due to perceived attempts to compromise their operational procedures.
"Bello came carrying himself like an emperor in an environment where he is a suspect," another source noted. "The commission reportedly stumbled on some intelligence regarding his motives for surrender which could jeopardize his trial eventually."
The EFCC Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the new court session slated for Wednesday but declined further comments on the matter.
