A Philadelphia man, Shaurn Thomas who previously received a $4.1 million settlement after being wrongfully imprisoned for 24 years, has been sent back to jail. Thomas, now 50, pleaded guilty to the murder of Akeem Edwards, which occurred on January 3, 2023, over a $1,200 drug debt.
The case has drawn significant attention due to Thomas's history. His earlier conviction was overturned in 2017 after the Pennsylvania Innocence Project highlighted critical flaws in the police investigation and interrogation tactics. Despite his exoneration, prosecutors had lingering doubts about his complete innocence in the original case.
During the recent plea hearing, Common Pleas Court Judge Roxanne Covington expressed disbelief at Thomas's actions, given his previous settlement and freedom. "Are these facts true?" Judge Covington asked, to which Thomas confirmed his guilt. Alongside the murder charge, he also admitted to conspiracy, illegal gun possession and other related offenses.
The family of the victim, Akeem Edwards, is calling for a life sentence. Edwards' sister, Tyeisha Marshall, stated, "There’s not enough time for them to possibly give him," reflecting the family's desire for justice.
Thomas's sentencing is scheduled for February.
