Brazilian influencer and model Suellen Carey, who made headlines last year for marrying herself, has now filed for divorce from herself.
This act, known as sologamy, was initially celebrated as a bold statement of self-love and independence. However, Suellen's journey through this unconventional marriage has revealed deeper complexities.
Suellen, 36, embarked on her solo marriage after struggling to find a suitable partner. She put massive effort into making her sologamy work, even attending couple's therapy alone. Despite these efforts, she found herself feeling lonely and dissatisfied.
In an interview, Suellen shared, "I had very high expectations from myself, which I couldn't meet, and so I felt quite exhausted in my relationship." She further explained that the loneliness she experienced during her sologamy ultimately led her to decide that she needed a real partner in life.
Reflecting on her experience, Suellen emphasized the importance of self-analysis and knowing when to end a cycle that isn't working. "Self-analysis and reflection are necessary," she said. Before deciding to divorce herself, Suellen attended ten therapy sessions to understand the challenges she was facing. She realized that ending her marriage with herself was essential for her healing and personal growth.
Suellen's story is not unique. In 2021, another Brazilian woman named Cris Galera married herself but divorced just 90 days later after finding "someone special."
Similarly, in 2022, Kshama Bindu became the first Indian woman to marry herself, inspired by a Netflix show. These instances highlight a growing trend where individuals marry themselves to express independence, though they may eventually seek traditional partnerships.
