Woman Remanded in Prison for Allegedly Threatening Seyi Tinubu, IGP On Social Media

A Federal High Court in Abuja has remanded a woman, Olamide Thomas, in prison following allegations of threatening prominent figures, including Seyi Tinubu, the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and the Police Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi, with death via social media.

The charges, filed under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/636/2024, were brought by a team of police lawyers led by A.A. Egwu.

The prosecution alleges that Thomas knowingly transmitted video communications on her social media platforms, making threatening remarks in Yoruba. In one such video, she allegedly stated, "Mr. Seyi Tinubu would die this year," which reportedly instilled fear of death, violence, or bodily harm in Mr. Tinubu.

During the court proceedings, Victor Okoye, representing the police, confirmed readiness to proceed with the arraignment. After the charges were read, Thomas pleaded not guilty. Her defense counsel, T.J. Aondo, SAN, attempted to make an oral bail application, but Justice Emeka Nwite directed that a formal application be filed instead. The judge assured that the court would promptly hear the bail application once submitted.

Justice Nwite ordered Thomas to be remanded at Suleja Correctional Centre pending the hearing of her bail application, scheduled for December 30. The charges against her are said to contravene Section 24 (2) (a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.

In addition to the threats against Seyi Tinubu, Thomas is accused of making similar threats against IGP Egbetokun and PPRO Adejobi. She allegedly claimed that "the children of Adejobi would all die before his eyes," further intensifying the gravity of the accusations.
