West Ham United's striker, Michail Antonio, is recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery for a lower limb fracture sustained in a severe car accident.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when Antonio's silver Ferrari crashed in Epping Forest, Essex, leaving the Jamaican footballer trapped in the vehicle for over 45 minutes.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, with fire crews working diligently to free Antonio from the wreckage. He was subsequently airlifted to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery.
West Ham confirmed his stable condition in a statement released on Sunday, expressing gratitude for the support received from the football community and acknowledging the efforts of emergency responders.
A witness, Samuel Woods, who encountered the aftermath of the crash, described Antonio as "disoriented," recounting that the footballer's first words were, "Where am I? What's going on? What car am I in?" This highlights the severity of the crash and Antonio's initial confusion following the incident.
Essex Police have launched an investigation into the single-vehicle collision, which took place shortly before 1 PM on Coppice Row.
They are appealing for witnesses and any available footage to assist in their inquiry. A police spokesperson stated, "An investigation will be carried out by our Roads Policing Unit. If you have any information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us."
