The Enugu State Government has clarified its budgetary allocations for road projects in the 2025 fiscal year. Contrary to earlier reports suggesting an allocation of ₦55 billion, the government has confirmed that a substantial sum of ₦213 billion has been earmarked for the construction, reconstruction, and rehabilitation of both urban and rural roads across the state.
This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Chris-Roberts Ozongwu, during a detailed breakdown of the 2025 Enugu State Budget Appropriation at the Enugu NUJ Press Centre.
Governor Peter Mbah presented the comprehensive budget proposal, which totals ₦971 billion, to the Enugu State House of Assembly. The budget reflects massive investments not only in infrastructure but also in education, healthcare, and other critical sectors. The allocation for roads is part of a broader strategy to enhance connectivity and boost economic activities within the state.
The Commissioner highlighted specific projects, including the dualisation of the Nike-Ugwuogo-Opi-Nsukka Road, which will require ₦10 billion, and the completion of the Ugwuogo Nike-Agu Ukehe-Umunko Road, with an allocation of ₦1 billion. These projects are expected to improve transportation links and facilitate easier movement of goods and people.
In addition to road infrastructure, the budget outlines allocations for various government offices, with ₦50.27 billion set aside for the Office of the Governor, ₦665.71 million for the Deputy Governor’s office, and ₦3.42 billion for the Office of the Secretary to the State Government. These funds are intended to support the efficient functioning of the state's administrative machinery.
The budget also places a strong emphasis on education, with ₦146 billion allocated for equipping Smart Schools across the state's 260 political wards. Furthermore, ₦100 billion is designated for constructing 200 Integrated Model Smart Schools, comprising classroom blocks for nursery, primary, and junior secondary levels in the 250 wards across the 17 local government areas.
Healthcare is another priority, with ₦500 million allocated for establishing the Enugu Blood Service Commission and ₦20 billion for constructing the Enugu International Hospital on Rangers Avenue. These initiatives aim to enhance healthcare delivery and ensure better health outcomes for residents.
In the agricultural sector, the government plans to invest ₦20 billion in purchasing 1,000 tractors and implements to support mechanized farming. Additionally, ₦52.5 billion is allocated for clearing and developing 100,000 hectares of land for three Special Crop Processing Agricultural Zones, which are expected to boost agricultural productivity and create job opportunities.
Sports development is also on the agenda, with ₦10 billion allocated for renovating the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and ₦3 billion for revamping the Awgu Games Village. These projects are aimed at promoting sports and recreational activities within the state.
