The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) have announced their nominations, and Nigerian artists are making major waves in the Best Afrobeats category.
Burna Boy's "City Boy," Tems' "Love Me Jeje," and Ayra Starr's "Last Heartbreak Song" featuring Giveon have all earned nominations.
Additionally, Pheelz has been recognized for his contributions to Usher's "Ruin," while Davido and Lojay received nods for their guest verses on Chris Brown's "Sensational." South African star Tyla also secured a nomination for her global hit "Water."
Global superstar Taylor Swift leads the nominations with ten, followed closely by Post Malone with nine. Ariana Grande, Eminem, and Sabrina Carpenter each garnered six nominations. The 2024 VMAs will take place on September 10 at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, just outside of New York City.
In the highly competitive categories, the nominees for Video of the Year include Ariana Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” Billie Eilish’s “Lunch,” Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red,” Eminem’s “Houdini,” SZA’s “Snooze,” and Taylor Swift featuring Post Malone’s “Fortnight.”
For Artist of the Year, the contenders are Ariana Grande, Bad Bunny, Eminem, Sabrina Carpenter, SZA, and Taylor Swift.
The Song of the Year category features Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” Taylor Swift featuring Post Malone’s “Fortnight,” and Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control.”
This year marks a notable increase in first-time nominees, with 29 artists receiving their inaugural VMA nods.
Among them are Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Coco Jones, Gracie Abrams, Jelly Roll, Jessie Murph, LE SSERAFIM, Morgan Wallen, Rauw Alejandro, RAYE, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey, Tyla, Tyler Childers, and Victoria Monét.
Fan voting for the VMAs is open online across 15 gender-neutral categories until August 30, with voting for Best New Artist remaining active throughout the show.
