US: Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi Undergoes Emergency Hip-Replacement Surgery

Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has successfully undergone emergency hip-replacement surgery.

The procedure took place on Saturday after Pelosi sustained injuries during a visit to Luxembourg. Her office confirmed the news, stating that the surgery was conducted at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center located at Landstuhl Army Base in Germany.

Pelosi, aged 84, is recognized as one of America's most influential Democrats and holds the distinction of being the first woman to serve as Speaker of the US House of Representatives. She stepped down from her second term in this role in 2023 but continues to serve as an elected representative from California, maintaining significant influence on Capitol Hill.

The injury occurred while Pelosi was in Luxembourg with a bipartisan congressional delegation to commemorate the 80th anniversary of World War II's Battle of the Bulge.

Reports suggest that she tripped while descending marble stairs, resulting in a fall that led to a broken hip.

Ian Krager, a spokesperson for Pelosi, expressed gratitude on her behalf, saying, "Speaker Emerita Pelosi is grateful to the US military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg for their excellent care and kindness."

He further added that Pelosi is "enjoying the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and well wishes" and remains determined to advocate for quality healthcare access for all Americans.
