Russian President Vladimir Putin has made it clear that any peace deal concerning Ukraine will come at a steep price. The Kremlin has refrained from offering congratulations to Trump, instead signaling that the U.S. must "earn" the peace deal promised during Trump's campaign.
According to Kremlin spokespersons, the conditions for such a deal are stringent. Russia demands the neutralization of Ukraine's military capabilities, a halt to its NATO membership aspirations and control over its southern and eastern regions. These demands echo previous ultimatums issued by Moscow, which were largely dismissed by the Biden administration as lacking in good faith.
"The message is, if you want a deal, you’re going to crawl on your knees for it," a source close to the Kremlin stated, showing the tough stance adopted by Putin. This approach sets Putin apart from other European leaders who have extended olive branches to the incoming Trump administration.
Nina Khrushcheva, an expert on Russian politics, noted, "Putin feels he is starting out with Trump from a position of strength." This confidence is bolstered by Russia's recent military gains in Ukraine, despite significant losses on the battlefield.
During his campaign, Trump hinted at a willingness to reconsider sanctions against Russia, suggesting they should be used "very judiciously." However, his advisers have not shown any inclination to meet Putin's specific demands. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has advocated for a tougher stance, including tightening sanctions and increasing military support for Ukraine.
