UN pledges $6 million in emergency aid to Maiduguri flood victims

The response aims to alleviate the immediate suffering of displaced people and prevent further health crises in the region.

The United Nations has announced a $6 million donation to help flood victims in Maiduguri, Borno State.

This comes after a spill from the Alau Dam displaced thousands of residents, many of whom were already affected by conflict and insecurity in the region.

In a statement, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, confirmed that a joint team of UN agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the Nigerian Red Cross had visited the affected area.

“We met people who have been displaced several times, and this flood has added to their distress,” Fall said. The UN and its partners are responding with immediate relief measures. “We are providing hot meals and airlifting food to areas inaccessible due to flooding,” Fall added.

Other measures

In addition, water purification tablets, hygiene services, as well as emergency medical care and shelter will be provided to contain outbreaks.

The floods have also hit local agriculture hard, with more than 125,000 hectares of farmland damaged.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is working to secure additional funding for continued assistance. This response is intended to alleviate the immediate suffering of the displaced and prevent further health crises in the region.
