A UK woman inadvertently threw away a hard drive containing her ex-boyfriend's Bitcoin key, now valued at an astonishing £589 million.
James Howells, the owner of the Bitcoin, mined the digital currency back in 2009 but forgot about it until its value skyrocketed.
The hard drive, which held the crucial access key to his Bitcoin wallet, was mistakenly discarded by his then-partner, Hafina Eddy-Evans.
Eddy-Evans explained, "Yes, I threw away his rubbish, he asked me to." She recounted how she took the hard drive to a local landfill in Wales, not realizing its significance.
"I had no idea what was in it," she added, emphasizing that she acted on Howells' request to dispose of unwanted items.
Now, Howells is embroiled in a legal battle with Newport Council, seeking permission to excavate the landfill in hopes of recovering the lost treasure.
He has pledged to donate ten percent of any recovered funds to the local community, aiming to transform Newport into a thriving hub akin to "Dubai or Las Vegas of the UK."
However, Newport Council has repeatedly denied his requests, citing environmental concerns.
