The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery announced that the UK has granted approximately 300,000 new visas to Nigerian nationals over the past few years. This revelation underscores the UK's favorable visa policies towards Nigerians, reflecting a positive trend in bilateral relations.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Montgomery emphasized the substantial number of visas approved for Nigerians, stating, "The trends have been really positive. Nigeria has been a major beneficiary of the post-Brexit migration visa rules." He further elaborated on the importance of Nigerian nationals in various sectors within the UK, particularly noting their contributions to the social care sector.
Montgomery highlighted that the number of work visas issued to Nigerians has seen a remarkable increase, with figures rising from 10,000 to 20,000 six or seven years ago, to an impressive 80,000 to 90,000 annually in the last two years. Additionally, he mentioned that 145,000 visit visas have already been approved this year, mirroring last year's numbers.
While acknowledging a decline in student visas, with numbers dropping from over 100,000 last academic year to around 70,000 this year, Montgomery maintained that the overall visa approval rate remains high. "If you apply with the right documentation and the right evidence, the approval rate is very high," he assured.
The British High Commissioner also noted that Nigeria accounts for about 10 percent of all visas granted by the UK in the last two years, further emphasizing the strength of the relationship between the two nations. Montgomery concluded by asserting, "I would like to emphasize how huge the relationship is; it outstrips any other visa relationship that Nigeria has with any other single country."
This announcement comes as a testament to the enduring diplomatic ties and mutual benefits shared between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, fostering opportunities for growth and collaboration across various sectors.
