UK Enabling Corruption in Nigeria, Grow Up, Move On – Aisha Yesufu Calls Out Kemi Badenoch

Nigerian social critic, Aisha Yesufu, recently made headlines with her pointed remarks directed at Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the United Kingdom Conservative Party. Yesufu's comments were in response to Badenoch's controversial statements about Nigeria, which she shared on her X handle, sparking widespread discussion and debate.

Badenoch, who identifies as Yoruba, had previously described her upbringing in Nigeria as being overshadowed by fear and insecurity, attributing these conditions to the pervasive corruption within the country.

She reportedly stated that she has nothing in common with the northern part of Nigeria, further fueling the controversy. Despite facing criticism for allegedly denigrating Nigeria, Badenoch stood by her remarks, even taking a dig at the nation's police structure.

In a bold rebuttal, Yesufu accused the UK of enabling corruption in Nigeria by providing an environment conducive to the looting of Nigerian wealth. She argued that if such an environment did not exist, the association of poverty with Nigeria would not be as prevalent.

"If the UK doesn’t provide an enabling environment for people to loot Nigeria’s wealth and take it there, ‘poor’ and ‘Nigeria’ wouldn’t be in the same sentence," Yesufu asserted.

Yesufu also criticized Badenoch for what she termed a "Nigerian poverty mentality," cautioning her against lowering standards in the UK. She questioned the relevance of Badenoch's experiences with the Nigerian police when asked about her trust in the British police, suggesting that such comparisons were misplaced.

"Kemi Badenoch @KemiBadenoch should grow up and move on! Context is everything! She was asked if she trusts the British police. How is what happened with the Nigerian police a reason for her to determine if she trusts the British police or not?" Yesufu wrote.
