UK Denies Backing Yoruba Nation Petition, Says Nigerian Government

The Nigerian Federal Government On Tuesday October 15, clarified that the United Kingdom did not endorse a petition by Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as "Sunday Igboho," which advocated for the creation of a Yoruba Nation.

This statement came in response to misleading media reports suggesting UK support for the petition.

In a statement, Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described these media reports as "highly misleading." He explained that the British High Commissioner in Abuja was invited to discuss the matter.

According to the High Commissioner, while the delivery of letters and petitions to No. 10 Downing Street is a common practice, it does not imply endorsement by any UK government agency or the UK Parliamentary Petitions Committee.

The High Commissioner emphasized that "the UK government typically does not concern itself with petitions concerning the sovereign affairs of another country."
