UI Shuts Down Campus Amid Tuition Fee Protests, Orders Students Home [VIDEO]

The University of Ibadan (UI) has mandated all students to vacate the campus and embark on a three-week break from August 31 to September 20, in response to widespread protests over a recent hike in tuition fees. This decision follows a series of demonstrations and a boycott of lectures by the student body.

In an official circular, the institution’s registrar, G.O. Saliu, stated, “Following the meeting of university management with the leadership of the students’ union today, the vice-chancellor on behalf of the senate, has approved a three-week break for students of the University of Ibadan, with effect from Saturday, August 31, 2024, to September 20, 2024. The hostel will be reopened from 12 noon on Friday, September 20.”

The break is intended to provide students ample time to complete their online registration for the 2023/2024 first semester examinations, which are scheduled to commence on September 23, 2024. Saliu emphasized that the registration period will close on September 20, 2024, with no extensions or reopening of the portal for fee payment or course registration thereafter. He warned, “Students who do not register appropriately would not be allowed to write examinations.”

The protests erupted after the governing council announced an increase in tuition fees, prompting immediate backlash from the student community.

The university's decision to send students home aims to de-escalate tensions and ensure that academic activities can resume smoothly once the break concludes.
