South African singer Tyla made a powerful statement at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, where she critiqued the Western habit of labeling all African music as Afrobeats.
During her acceptance speech for Best Afrobeats Song, Tyla praised the global impact of Afrobeats but emphasized the need to recognize the diversity within African music genres. "Afrobeats has undeniably taken the world by storm," Tyla said, "but it's crucial that we also acknowledge other vibrant African genres like Amapiano." She highlighted the success of her own song "Water" as an example of African music's potential in the pop scene.
Tyla also took the opportunity to acknowledge prominent Afrobeats artists such as Tems, Ayra Starr, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Rema, and Lojay. Her comments come amid ongoing industry discussions about the evolution of Afrobeats and a noticeable trend of some artists exploring other genres like Amapiano.
