The use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has once again come under intense scrutiny.
The incident in question involved Chelsea's Moises Caicedo, whose studs-up challenge on Tottenham's Pape Matar Sarr was deemed not worthy of a red card by VAR officials, sparking widespread outrage among fans and commentators alike.
The match, held on Sunday, saw Tottenham establish an early 2-0 lead with goals from Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski. However, the focus quickly shifted to the controversial decision that allowed Caicedo to remain on the pitch.
Sky Sports commentator Jamie Carragher expressed disbelief at the ruling, stating, "What? Have I missed something there? That is unbelievable."
Despite the severity of the challenge, which saw Caicedo go over the ball and catch Sarr on the shin, the VAR review concluded that no further action was necessary.
This decision left many, including Carragher, questioning the consistency and effectiveness of VAR in ensuring fair play. "I don't like seeing people get sent off," Carragher continued, "but it was absolutely certain it was going to be a red card. They've got away with a huge one there, Chelsea."
The decision proved pivotal as Caicedo later won a penalty for Chelsea, converted by Cole Palmer, contributing to their comeback to equalize the score.
