Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is on the verge of receiving a substantial ban from the Football Association (FA) following an alleged racial slur directed at his teammate, Son Heung-min.
The incident reportedly occurred during a television appearance in Uruguay, where Bentancur made a comment perceived as derogatory towards South Koreans.
The controversy erupted when Bentancur, while appearing on Uruguayan TV, was asked about obtaining Son's kit. His response, "maybe from his cousin" because "they all look the same," sparked outrage and led to the FA charging him with an 'aggravated breach' of their rules.
Although the exact length of the suspension remains unconfirmed, reports suggest it could be a seven-match ban. Bentancur has since issued a heartfelt apology to Son, describing his remark as a "very bad joke."
In a social media post, he expressed remorse, stating, "Sonny brother! I apologise to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke! You know that I love you and I would never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else! I love you brother!" Son Heung-min, reflecting on the incident, acknowledged Bentancur's apology, noting that his teammate was "close to tears" when he apologized.
Son emphasized the importance of learning from mistakes, saying, "We are all human and all make mistakes and we learn from it."
