Nigerian music sensation Tiwa Savage has candidly discussed her divorce from ex-husband Tunji Balogun, popularly known as TeeBillz, in a recent interview on The Receipts Podcast.
The singer revealed that the separation, which was publicly announced by TeeBillz in 2018, was not initiated by her.
In the interview, Savage expressed her frustration and heartbreak over the public's reaction to the divorce. "The way our situation happened, he announced it online. I did not break up with him, but I was the one being attacked," she stated.
At the time of the announcement, Savage was grappling with postpartum depression following the birth of their son, which added to the emotional turmoil she faced.
Savage recounted how the public and media were quick to blame her for the breakdown of the marriage. "My baby was just a few months old at that time. My body wasn’t the same because I was dealing with postpartum and depression. Only a few people came to see me. Everyone went to him," she explained.
The criticism intensified after she attempted to share her side of the story through an interview, leading to further backlash. "People were like, ‘How dare you go and talk? You are a woman, and you are supposed to build the house. It’s your fault.’"
The experience was a turning point for the artist, who described it as an "eye-opener" that led to a period of depression and anger. "It made me depressed and angry for so long. Then I became the ‘African Bad Girl.’ I started getting tattoos and wearing bikinis and short skirts," she revealed, highlighting how the ordeal influenced her personal and professional life.
Despite the challenges, Savage remains a prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry, known for her resilience and talent. Her openness about the divorce sheds light on the pressures faced by women in the public eye and the societal expectations placed upon them.
