Tinubu Set to Strengthen Ties with South Africa in Upcoming Bi-National Commission

President Bola Tinubu is poised to embark on a diplomatic mission as he travels from France to Cape Town, South Africa, on Monday.

This visit marks an important step in bolstering Nigeria's bilateral relations with South Africa, as Tinubu will co-chair the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) alongside President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The BNC, established in 1999, serves as a pivotal platform for enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

According to a statement by Tinubu’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the commission's session is scheduled to commence on December 3, following a ministerial meeting on December 2 at the South African Parliament Building in Cape Town. "President Tinubu and President Ramaphosa will engage in substantive talks on a wide range of issues of mutual interest, including bilateral, regional, and international matters," Onanuga noted.

This year's session will feature deliberations across eight working groups, each focusing on specific areas such as political consultations, consular and migration, banking and finance, defense and security, manufacturing, social sector, mines and energy, and trade and investments.

The discussions aim to build on commitments made during their previous meeting in Johannesburg on June 20, 2024, shortly after President Ramaphosa's inauguration for a second term.

Officials from both countries are expected to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements, further solidifying the partnership between Nigeria and South Africa.
