President Bola Tinubu has announced the cancellation of all his official engagements in Lagos State during the Christmas holidays.
This decision comes in the wake of tragic stampedes that claimed numerous lives in Abuja and Anambra State.
On Saturday, December 21, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command reported a devastating incident at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, where a stampede resulted in ten fatalities and left several others injured.
Concurrently, in Anambra State, a similar tragedy unfolded during a rice distribution event in the Okija community, leading to the deaths of at least 20 residents.
Reacting to these heartbreaking incidents, President Tinubu expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized the urgent need for stringent crowd control measures.
"Commiserating with the victims of the unfortunate incidents in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory, President Tinubu urged states and relevant authorities to enforce strict crowd control measures immediately," Onanuga stated.
The President was scheduled to attend a boat parade and other activities at the Boat Regatta from his Oyinkan Abayomi Drive residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.
However, upon receiving briefings about the tragedies, he decided to cancel his appearance. Dignitaries, including top officials of the Lagos State government and white cap chiefs, were already present at the venue when the announcement was made.
Highlighting the disturbing similarities between the recent mishaps in Abuja, Anambra, and a previous incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, earlier this week, Tinubu called for accountability. "Local and state authorities should no longer tolerate operational lapses by organizations and corporate bodies involved in charitable and humanitarian activities," he asserted.
