President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a teaching hospital in Akure, Ondo State.
This initiative is set to support the training of medical students at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA). The decision signifies the government's commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and education.
President Tinubu has tasked the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Mohammad Pate, with initiating the necessary arrangements for this project.
A team led by Dr. Jimoh Olawole Salaudeen, Director of Hospital Services at the Federal Ministry of Health, has already visited Ondo State to assess potential sites.
Dr. Salaudeen expressed optimism about the project's progress, stating, "We are here to coordinate with the state government and review the site options for establishing the teaching hospital."
The proposed teaching hospital will temporarily operate from the Akure Annex of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) while the permanent site at FUTA is being developed.
Dr. Salaudeen highlighted the urgency of the project, noting that FUTA's medical students are already in their third year and require facilities to complete their clinical studies.
Ondo State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, affirmed the state government's support, saying, "We have drafted an MOU and laid groundwork for the medical students to complete their training on schedule."
This collaboration between the federal and state governments aims to create a model federal tertiary hospital that will serve as a cornerstone for medical education in the region.
FUTA’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, expressed relief and gratitude for the federal government's intervention. She emphasized the role of FUTA’s biomedical engineering department in contributing to the healthcare sector, stating, "This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to training future health professionals and engineers who can innovate and support the healthcare sector."
