Tennis Icon Rafael Nadal to Retire After Davis Cup Finals in November

One of the most celebrated figures in tennis history, Rafael Nadal has announced his intention to retire following the Davis Cup Finals in November 2024.

This decision marks the conclusion of an extraordinary career spanning two decades, during which Nadal amassed 22 Grand Slam singles titles, including a record-breaking 14 French Open victories, solidifying his status as the "King of Clay."

His dominance on clay courts is unparalleled, with 63 ATP-level singles titles on this surface and an impressive 81 consecutive wins, the longest single-surface win streak in the Open Era.

Nadal's career is distinguished not only by his achievements on the court but also by his role in the "Big Three," alongside Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who collectively dominated men's tennis for nearly two decades.

He has been ranked world No. 1 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 209 weeks and finished as the year-end No. 1 five times. His accolades include two Olympic gold medals, one in singles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and another in doubles at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Born on June 3, 1986, in Manacor, Mallorca, Spain, Nadal began playing tennis at the age of four under the guidance of his uncle Toni Nadal. Despite being naturally right-handed, he plays left-handed, a strategic decision that contributed to his success. Throughout his career, Nadal has been recognized for his sportsmanship, winning the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award five times, and was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year in 2011 and 2021.

As Nadal prepares for his final tournament, the Davis Cup Finals, he reflects on his journey, stating, "I'm very excited that my last tournament will be the Davis Cup final, representing my country. I think it's coming full circle, as one of my first great moments of joy was the [Davis Cup] final in Seville in 2004." The event will take place from November 19-24, 2024, at the Palacio de Deportes José María Martín Carpena in Malaga, Spain, where Nadal will represent Spain one last time.
