Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has announced that a team of 28 lawyers in Lagos State is prepared to offer legal assistance to anyone arrested or prosecuted during the #EndBadGovernance protest.
This nationwide protest, set to take place from August 1 to August 10, 2024, aims to address issues such as hardship, worsening poverty, and poor governance in Nigeria.
Despite efforts by the government, traditional rulers, and clerics to dissuade the protesters, the organizers remain resolute in their demands for economic reforms, including the reversal of the fuel price hike, restoration of affordable electricity tariffs, and reduction of import duties.
The protests have already seen some arrests, with seven individuals detained across Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Niger states for promoting the protest online or marketing protest kits.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) met with activists, including Effiong, to discuss the protests, but concerns about potential violence and the safety of protesters remain high.
The IGP suggested confining the protests to specific locations, although he assured that there are no plans to disrupt rallies held outside these designated areas.
