The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully restored electricity to most parts of Bayelsa State following a four-month blackout.
This development was announced by Emmanuel Anyaegbulem, the General Manager of TCN’s Port Harcourt Region, during a news conference held in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.
The prolonged power outage, which began on July 29, was attributed to the vandalism of approximately 20 transmission towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132 Kilovolt (KV) electricity lines.
"The 132KV line is the only transmission line that supplies electricity to Bayelsa state," Anyaegbulem explained, highlighting the critical nature of the infrastructure.
The restoration process, completed on November 30, posed significant challenges due to the extent of the damage.
Anyaegbulem noted, "The repairs of the collapsed towers presented a significant challenge for us, considering that the blackout lasted from July 29 until November 30."
He further disclosed that constructing a single transmission tower costs about N13 million, underscoring the financial burden of the repairs.
In response to the vandalism, TCN has intensified security measures and collaborated with law enforcement agencies.
Anyaegbulem reported that police officers attached to TCN had arrested about 10 suspects involved in the vandalism activities. "Out of the 10 suspects arrested, four have already been convicted by the courts, while six remain in police custody," he stated.
