Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has voiced strong criticism against the tax reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu's administration, labeling them as "anti-North" and a potential threat to national unity.

The governor's remarks were made during a gathering with the Christian Community in Bauchi State at the Government House, where he expressed his concerns about the implications of these reforms on northern Nigeria.

Governor Mohammed did not mince words as he described the Tax Reforms Bills as being designed to favor only a specific section of the country, thereby marginalizing the North. He emphasized that such policies could lead to massive discontent and division within the nation.

"The Tax Reforms Bills are aimed at shortchanging northern Nigeria," he stated, urging the federal government to reconsider its approach and listen to the voices of the people.

The governor's passionate plea was not just a critique but also a call for inclusive governance. He stressed the importance of leadership that is responsive to the needs and concerns of all Nigerians, regardless of their regional or ethnic backgrounds. "This is not an oligarchy, this is not a military rule; they must listen to the people, and that is what makes a good leader," he asserted.

Governor Mohammed further highlighted the economic challenges facing the North, pointing out that the region would struggle to generate sufficient revenue under the current tax policies.

He warned that without adjustments, the government might face increased resistance and unrest. "We are not going to get money to pay you salaries, to do roads. They must listen, otherwise, they are calling for anarchy," he cautioned.

The governor's comments come amid broader debates about the fairness and effectiveness of the tax reforms. While some argue that the changes are necessary for economic restructuring, others, like Governor Mohammed, believe they disproportionately impact certain regions, exacerbating existing inequalities.

In his speech, Governor Mohammed also called for unity and cooperation across party lines to address the pressing issues facing the country. He urged leaders to prioritize the welfare of the people over political interests, emphasizing that "leadership is listening to the people and being sensitive to their feelings."

The governor's appeal extended beyond policy critique, as he encouraged prayers for the nation's leaders, including himself, to guide them towards decisions that would benefit all Nigerians. "We should continue to pray for the President and his government that God will make them listen, may God make them change their minds and policies in a way that will be beneficial to all Nigerians," he said.
