Tax Reforms Aim to Benefit All States Equally, Not Just Lagos — Sanwo-Olu Clarifies

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu addressed concerns regarding Nigeria's proposed tax reform bills.

Contrary to claims that Lagos would be the primary beneficiary, Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the reforms are designed to benefit all states equally.

He urged Nigerians to fully understand the reforms before forming opinions.

Governor Sanwo-Olu responded to assertions made by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, who suggested that the value-added tax (VAT) sharing model would disproportionately favor Lagos and Rivers States.

Sanwo-Olu countered this narrative, stating, "I have seen comments around, such as Lagos being the major beneficiary.

It is not true. Lagos is actually going to be shaped-off in some places."

He explained that the reforms aim to encourage discipline and hard work across all states, noting, "This is not an easy kill. You need to work harder to get the full benefit of the reform."

While acknowledging potential short-term losses for Lagos, he highlighted the opportunity for the state to play a more significant role in national development.

Sanwo-Olu also pointed out Nigeria's low tax-to-GDP ratio as a critical reason for the reforms, which are intended to foster a fair and inclusive system.

He reassured Nigerians, saying, "The intention is not to hurt anybody. It’s for all of us, and we should approach it with optimism."
