Tax Reform: Kano Assembly Rejects Bills

Kano State House of Assembly has firmly rejected the Tax Reform bills currently under consideration by Nigeria's National Assembly.

The rejection was announced during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Isma’il Falgore, where lawmakers expressed deep concerns about the potential economic impact on Northern States.

The Majority Leader, Lawan Husseini, introduced a motion of "urgent public importance," emphasizing the need for northern lawmakers and the Conference of Speakers to block the passage of these bills.

Husseini argued that the proposed Value-Added Tax (VAT) allocation system would disproportionately favor Lagos and its surrounding areas, which are home to major corporations like Nigerian banks and telecommunications companies.

He stated, “Lagos and its environs would account for 80 percent of the VAT collected in Nigeria, leaving northern states with a minimal share.”

Husseini warned that if the bills were passed into law, they could further weaken the financial stability of northern states, potentially rendering some unable to pay salaries and exacerbating poverty and hardship.
