The Nigerian Senate has firmly dismissed reports suggesting that the Tax Reform Bills, introduced by President Tinubu, have been suspended.
Contrary to these claims, the bills are very much alive and under active consideration. This clarification was made by Senator Akpabio, who emphasized the importance of accurate media reporting.
Senator Akpabio stated, "The tax reform bills are alive in this hallowed chamber, they are receiving consideration at various levels and we are open to discussions to negotiations to interface."
He further clarified that these are executive bills, which can only be withdrawn by the executive branch, and there is no intention to do so as they serve the public interest.
The misinformation stemmed from a point of order raised by Senator Michael Bamidele Opeyemi, who criticized the misreporting of the Senate's proceedings.
He noted that some media outlets had inaccurately reported that the Senate had suspended the bills, leading to confusion among the public.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan reinforced this position, confirming that the bills have not been suspended and are progressing through legislative processes.
