Tax Reform Bills: "Just Lagos and Rivers State Will be the Beneficiaries" - Governor Zulum

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has raised significant concerns about the potential regional disparities these reforms might create.

According to Zulum, the current structure of the tax reform disproportionately benefits states like Lagos and Rivers, leaving other regions, particularly in Northern Nigeria, at a disadvantage.

Governor Zulum emphasized that "based on the calculations that we did, only Lagos and Rivers States will benefit from this scheme."

He urged the federal government to reconsider certain clauses within the bill, suggesting that they could be detrimental to broader regional interests.

Zulum's call for a pause and deeper consultation reflects his belief that the bill should not be rushed through the National Assembly without thorough understanding and adjustments to ensure equitable benefits across all states.

Highlighting his political stance, Zulum reminded the public of his support for power rotation to the south before the 2023 elections, stating, "I was the first governor to come out publicly and say that power must go to the South."

He also countered narratives suggesting northern opposition to Tinubu, pointing out that over 60% of Tinubu's electoral votes came from the north.
