Syrian Prime Minister Ghazi Al-Jalali Escorted by Armed Rebels to Hand Over Power in Damascus

Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Al-Jalali was escorted by armed rebel forces in Damascus on Sunday, marking a shift in the country's political landscape.

The event, captured on video, shows Al-Jalali being led by rebels to the Four Seasons Hotel, where he is expected to formally transfer government authority.

The footage reveals Al-Jalali surrounded by armed men as he descends steps and enters a black SUV. A voice in the video narrates, “The former Prime Minister is with the 5th Corps from the people of Hauran heading to the Four Seasons Hotel for a meeting and to hand over the country’s institutions to the heroes of the Free Army.”

This development follows the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, who has reportedly fled to an undisclosed location with his family.

Thousands of Syrians gathered in Damascus's main square, chanting "Freedom" in celebration of the end of Assad's 13-year rule.

The downfall of the Assad regime was influenced by regional dynamics, including the deaths of key Hezbollah leaders and Russia's focus on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Al-Jalali, who had previously called for free elections and vowed to preserve public institutions and citizen safety, is now collaborating with rebel commanders to manage a transitional period. He is reportedly in discussions with Abu Mohammed al-Golani, a prominent rebel commander, to establish a framework for the transitional government.

Meanwhile, Turkey-backed Syrian forces continue their campaign against Kurdish factions in northern Syria, adding complexity to the post-Assad political environment.

Syria’s military command has acknowledged Assad’s fall but maintains that military operations against "terrorist groups" persist in regions such as Hama, Homs, and the Deraa countryside.
