Syria: Joe Biden Outlines US Strategy Following Rebel Takeover

Islamic rebels have successfully overthrown the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The rebels seized control of Damascus over the weekend, ending more than 13 years of civil war and the Assad family's long-standing rule.

This seismic shift has prompted a response from the United States, with President Joe Biden outlining his administration's next steps.

Speaking from the White House, President Biden emphasized the importance of engaging with all Syrian groups to facilitate a political transition. "We will engage with all Syrian groups, including within the process led by the United Nations, to establish a transition away from the Assad regime toward an independent, sovereign Syria with a new constitution," Biden stated.

The fall of Assad's regime is seen as a pivotal moment for Syria. Biden described it as a "moment of historic opportunity" for the Syrian people, who have endured years of conflict.

He further remarked, "The fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice."

Reports suggest that Bashar al-Assad has fled to Russia following the takeover.

When asked about Assad's future, President Biden asserted that "Assad should be held accountable" for his actions during his time in power.

This development is expected to have far-reaching implications for Syria's political landscape and the broader geopolitical dynamics of the Middle East.
