Anchor University, a private institution owned by the Deeper Life Bible Church, student Evangel Ganiyu has publicly accused the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Oye Bandele, of mishandling her sexual assault complaint.
The incident, which occurred during ongoing campus renovations, has sparked significant outrage and calls for accountability.
On September 28, 2024, Ganiyu took to her social media account to detail the harrowing experience.
She recounted waking up to find a casual labourer, hired for the renovation work, almost naked in her bed. "Today, I woke up to feel the weight of somebody beside me. I believed it was my friend who slept over. It wasn't," she wrote.
The intruder, identified as Uche Okoro, was allegedly found with his shorts hanging so low that his buttocks were exposed.
Ganiyu immediately reported the incident to her hostel porter, who then informed the supervisor.
The supervisor organized a lineup of the workers, and Ganiyu identified Okoro as the perpetrator. Despite initially denying the act, Okoro confessed after another female student accused him of peeping on her in the bathroom earlier that morning. "The people around gave him a minor beating," Ganiyu added.
However, when Ganiyu reported the incident to Vice Chancellor Bandele, she faced unexpected hostility. Instead of receiving support, she was met with skepticism and accusatory questions.
"He proceeded to ask me the following questions: 'Were your clothes on?' 'Was your underwear on?' to which I answered yes and yes," Ganiyu recounted. Bandele then questioned her age and insinuated that she should have known if she had been penetrated, ultimately labeling her as "shady" and suggesting she be tested by a male doctor.
Ganiyu's allegations extend beyond her personal experience, claiming that the university has a history of covering up sexual assault cases by shaming victims into silence. "This is not the first time something like this is happening in this school where a female student is abused, and the school tries to cover it up by shaming her or telling her to forgive and forget," she stated.
