South Korean President Faces Impeachment

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing impeachment after his controversial attempt to impose martial law was swiftly overturned by lawmakers.

This move, perceived as an effort to obstruct investigations into alleged illegal activities involving him and his family, has plunged the nation into political turmoil.

The opposition Democratic Party, which holds a significant majority in the 300-member parliament, has been at the forefront of this push.

They have accused President Yoon of "gravely and extensively violating the constitution and the law," with MP Kim Seung-won stating, "This is an unforgivable crime one that cannot, should not, and will not be pardoned."

Public sentiment against Yoon is palpable, as thousands of protesters have taken to the streets demanding his resignation.

Demonstrator Lim Myeong-pan expressed the collective anger, saying, "Yoon’s act of imposing it in the first place without legitimate cause is a serious crime in itself."

The political crisis has also impacted the economy, with Seoul's stock exchange experiencing a downturn amid the unrest. Yoon's approval rating has plummeted to a mere 19%, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction over economic issues and controversies involving his wife, Kim Keon Hee.

Even within his own party, there is dissent. The leader of Yoon's ruling party described the martial law attempt as "tragic," although party lawmakers have decided to oppose the impeachment motion.
