Sokoto Governor Revives Hisbah

Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu, has re-established the Hisbah, an Islamic body dedicated to promoting cultural and religious values.

On Thursday, November 21, the governor inaugurated the new office of the Hisbah, which will operate under the state Ministry for Religious Affairs.

Governor Aliyu emphasized that the Hisbah's activities would be closely monitored to prevent human rights violations, stating, "Hisbah is not a state police but an organized body established to sanitize Muslims in the state."

He assured that any arrests made by the Hisbah would be handed over to the police for prosecution, thus maintaining a clear distinction between the roles of the Hisbah and conventional law enforcement.

The revival of the Hisbah aligns with Governor Aliyu's administration's 9-point Smart agenda, which prioritizes religious affairs. The governor highlighted the initiative's goal to rid the state of social vices and promote Islamic culture, noting, "Islam opposes all forms of satanic behavior."

Dr. Jabir Sani Maihula, Commissioner for Religious Affairs, praised the governor's support, describing it as "a typical example of responsive leadership" that aims to achieve high standards of morality and harmony within the community.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, represented by Waziri Sokoto, Sambo Wali Junaidu, endorsed the re-establishment of the Hisbah, expressing confidence that it would "positively influence trust and sanity among citizens."
