Authorities have intercepted six submarines, colloquially known as "narco subs," carrying a staggering 1,400 metric tons of drugs.
This operation, led by Colombia and involving 62 countries, marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against global drug trafficking networks.
The submarines were seized between October 1 and November 14, 2024, with a notable portion of the haul being 225 metric tons of cocaine. Among this, 5 metric tons were discovered aboard a semi-submersible vessel navigating a notorious marine trafficking route from Colombia to Australia.
Vice Adm. Orlando Enrique Grisales, chief of naval operations staff for the Colombian Navy, highlighted the scale of the operation, stating, "This is the third such 'narco sub' intercepted on this route, shows the persistent smuggling tactics employed since the late 1990s."
The vessels were equipped with enough fuel to reach Australia, indicating the sophisticated logistics behind these operations.
The discovery and interception of these submarines are part of a broader strategy to dismantle the complex networks that facilitate the global drug trade.
As Grisales noted, "Thanks to the maps carried by the first intercepted sub, we identified the route and began collaborating closely with Australian authorities."
