Six New Sports Announced for 2028 Olympics, One Sport Dropped

Six new sports have been confirmed for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. This announcement comes with the news that one sport will be removed from the Olympic roster.

The new additions to the 2028 Games include baseball & softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash. These sports were chosen to reflect their growing popularity and international appeal. Surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing, which were previously optional, will now become permanent fixtures in the Olympic lineup.

However, breaking, commonly known as breakdancing, which is set to make its debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics, will not be returning for the 2028 Games. The decision to drop breaking was made to streamline the number of events and focus on sports with broader global participation.

Casey Wasserman, chairman of the Los Angeles 2028 organizing committee, stated, "The proposed budget for the 2028 Games is $6.8 billion and will be completely funded by the private sector." This financial strategy aims to ensure a sustainable and economically viable event.

The inclusion of these new sports is expected to attract a diverse audience and increase viewership among younger generations. As IOC President Thomas Bach mentioned, "We are constantly evolving to stay relevant and engage with new audiences."
