Finnish authorities have taken decisive action against Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed leader of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile.
Ekpa, who faces serious allegations of terrorism-related activities, has had his assets frozen and is currently being held in Kylmäkoski vankila, one of Finland's most formidable prisons.
The Finnish government announced the arrest of Simon Ekpa alongside four others on charges related to incitement to violence and terrorism financing.
The Päijät-Häme District Court has remanded Ekpa in custody, citing public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent as the primary charge.
This move comes amid growing concerns over Ekpa's alleged use of social media platforms to promote violence in Nigeria's South-East region, targeting both civilians and authorities.
Kylmäkoski vankila, located in Vanhamaantie, Akaa, Finland, is known for its stringent security measures and houses some of the country's most dangerous criminals, including violent offenders and sex offenders.
The prison, which was featured in a 2023 Netflix documentary series, "Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons," is known for its harsh conditions and strict regulations.
Mikko Laaksonen, a senior detective superintendent at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, explained the rationale behind Ekpa's remand, stating, "Our procedure is based on the case, remand or travel ban as coercive measures for limiting freedom of movement for persons suspected of offences to which such measures are applicable."
The Finnish police have confirmed that Ekpa's assets, along with those of companies associated with him and his accomplices, have been frozen.
