Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), a subsidiary of Shell Plc, has announced a major milestone in its operations with the final investment decision (FID) on the Bonga North deep-water project.
This ambitious venture, located off the coast of Nigeria, represents a substantial commitment by Shell and its partners, who are collectively investing $5 billion into the project. The Bonga North development is poised to play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing oil and gas production in the region.
The Bonga North project is strategically connected to Shell's Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facility, where Shell holds a commanding 55% stake.
This integration is expected to optimize the production process and ensure efficient resource management. The project boasts an estimated recoverable resource volume exceeding 300 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe), underscoring its potential as a major contributor to the energy sector.
Shell has projected that Bonga North will reach peak production levels of approximately 110,000 barrels of oil per day (boepd). This output is anticipated to significantly bolster Shell's Integrated Gas and Upstream business, driving cash generation and reinforcing the company's position in the global energy market. The first oil from this project is expected to be produced by the end of the decade, marking a pivotal moment in Shell's operational timeline.
The announcement of the FID was made public through various media outlets, which highlighted the project's importance in sustaining oil and gas production at the Bonga field. The decision reflects Shell's ongoing commitment to investing in high-potential projects that align with its strategic objectives and contribute to the broader energy landscape.
In addition to its economic implications, the Bonga North project is also expected to have a positive impact on local communities and the Nigerian economy. By creating job opportunities and fostering economic growth, the project aligns with Shell's broader goals of supporting sustainable development in the regions where it operates.
