The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a decisive two-week ultimatum to 762 landowners in the upscale district of Maitama, Abuja.
These landowners are required to settle their outstanding payments for certificates of occupancy (C-of-O) by January 3, 2025, or risk permanent revocation of their land titles.
This stern warning follows a public notice released by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on December 19, 2024.
The notice identified individuals and companies who have not complied with an earlier directive issued on November 26, which initially gave defaulters two weeks to make their payments.Out of the original 3,273 defaulters, 2,511 have since complied, leaving 762 plots still at risk.
In a statement, Wike's spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, emphasized the government's commitment to enforcing compliance.
"After the January 3, 2025 deadline, defaulters will have their land titles finally revoked," Olayinka stated. He further noted that the primary aim of the government is to ensure payment, hence the additional grace period.
