Senate Fast-Tracks Bill for New Agricultural University in Osun State

The Nigerian Senate swiftly advanced a bill to establish the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State.

The bill, introduced by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, aims to address educational needs and train future agriculturalists, reflecting the government's commitment to diversifying Nigeria's economy through agriculture.

In his lead debate, Senator Bamidele emphasized the significance of the proposed institution. "Agriculture with its allied sectors is unquestionably the largest livelihood provider, more so in rural areas, and can contribute significantly to the GDP," he stated. He highlighted that the university would offer comprehensive education in agriculture and tropical studies, providing scientific training while promoting indigenous cultures and national unity.

The bill, which passed both first and second readings in under an hour, underscores the strategic importance of agriculture in national development. Senator Bamidele noted, "This will help the back-to-land policy of the federal government to ensure the diversification of our national economy."

The Senate has mandated its Committee on Tertiary Education and TETfund to conduct a public hearing and report back within two weeks, signaling a strong legislative push to make this vision a reality.
