Nigerian Senate has taken corrective action regarding the removal of Danladi Umar, the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), over allegations of misconduct.
Initially, the Senate had cited Section 157(1) of the Nigerian Constitution as the basis for Umar's removal.
However, this section pertains to the Code of Conduct Bureau and other executive agencies, not the judiciary where the CCT operates.
Recognizing the error, Senator Michael Bamidele Opeyemi introduced a motion to amend the resolution. He proposed the use of paragraph 17(3), PT 1, Fifth Schedule of the Constitution, which is more relevant to the situation.
This adjustment was necessary to ensure that the legislative process adhered strictly to constitutional guidelines.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the senators for their diligence in addressing the oversight, stating, "Our commitment to doing the right thing is unwavering, and we have corrected our course to align with constitutional mandates."
The Senate also sought the concurrence of the House of Representatives to solidify the resolution under the correct constitutional provisions. They urged Nigerians to disregard any misinformation stemming from the initial procedural mistake.
