President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has emphasized the National Assembly's commitment to enhancing educational accessibility across the nation.
This initiative involves the approval of new tertiary institutions, a move aimed at making education more accessible to Nigerians regardless of their geographical or socio-economic status. The Senate and the House of Representatives have been working in tandem to establish more educational institutions in various geo-political zones.
During a public hearing organized by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund, Akpabio highlighted the importance of education as a cornerstone for national progress.
He stated, "Education remains a cornerstone for national progress and its accessibility to all Nigerians, regardless of their geographical or socio-economic status, is a priority for this Senate."
The hearing focused on bills proposing the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic, Onueke, Ezza South in Ebonyi State, and Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri in Imo State.
The Senate's efforts are part of a broader legislative initiative to promote equity, growth, and prosperity in Nigeria. Senator Muntari Dandutse, chairman of the committee, noted that these proposed institutions align with the government's agenda to strengthen the education sector, reduce unemployment, and improve socio-economic conditions. The creation of specialized tertiary institutions is seen as a means to expand opportunities for skill acquisition and intellectual development, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s educational framework.
