Russia Faces Looming Labour Shortage, Looks to Migrants to Fill Gap

Russia has expressed an urgent need for migrant workers to address its growing labor shortage, a situation exacerbated by a "tense demographic situation," according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

The country is grappling with a declining population, a legacy issue from the Soviet era that has worsened due to a low birth rate, significant Covid-19 mortality rates, and emigration linked to the Ukraine conflict mobilization.

Peskov highlighted the critical role of migrants in Russia's development strategy, stating, "Migrants are a necessity. We live in the largest country in the world but there aren’t that many of us."

This statement underscores the pressing need for a stable labor force to support Russia's economic growth and development projects.

Despite government incentives like generous payouts and mortgage subsidies aimed at boosting the fertility rate, it remains below the replacement level of 2.0 births per woman. Recent statistics reveal a 3.4 percent drop in births compared to the previous year, marking the lowest number since the 1990s.
