Obaseki reiterated his stance that the country’s leaders have been relying on outdated solutions to address contemporary economic challenges.
Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has issued a stern warning about Nigeria’s economic future, claiming the country cannot progress without major structural changes. In a recent interview, Obaseki criticized the federal government's economic approach, saying it was "stuck in the past" and lacked the courage to implement major reforms.
Speaking to Channels TV reporter Sean Okinbaloy, Obaseki said, “The problem in Nigeria today is structural. Our structure has expired.
It is outdated. We need a new structure to lead the country's economy.
According to the governor, the current state -led system is no longer effective due to the problems of the country's deep financial problems.
Obaseki also pointed out that this was not an internal issue of intelligence or capabilities in the federal government, but did not take bold measures for meaningful changes. "It's not that the people there aren't smart. It's not that they're stupid. More importantly, they just don't have the courage to make some of the decisions that need to be made," he said.
The governor’s remarks followed a question raised by Okinbaloye, who referred to Obaseki’s previous statement that the government had resorted to printing money to address fiscal shortfalls. Obaseki reiterated his position that the country's leaders have relied on outdated solutions to address today's economic challenges.
"If we don't make this structural change, we're just wasting our time. If this does not happen, we will not move forward, "Obaseki concluded and called for urgent reform to ensure the future progress of Nigeria.
