Reps Demand Immediate Shutdown of Illegal Loan Apps Exploited by Criminals

Nigeria's House of Representatives has called for the immediate closure of illegal loan platforms used by "one chance" operatives to extort money from unsuspecting victims.

This resolution was passed following a motion of urgent public importance introduced by Representative Billy Osawaru during a plenary session on Wednesday.

Osawaru highlighted the grave impact of these criminal activities, describing them as "heinous" and noting that they have left many victims in dire straits. "The actions of these operatives subject victims to severe torture and empty their bank accounts," he stated.

The misuse of victims' personal information to secure unauthorized loans has resulted in substantial debts, further compounding their distress.

The House unanimously adopted the motion without debate, underscoring the urgency and severity of the issue. Lawmakers also urged the Nigeria Police, banks, and FinTech operators such as Opay and MoniePoint to prioritize cases involving "one chance" operations or kidnappings reported to them.

Osawaru pointed out that banks often hesitate to assist complainants until official police reports are provided, which delays justice and recovery for the victims.

In addition to addressing the menace of illegal loan apps, the House discussed other critical issues, including increasing budgetary support for the Defence Intelligence Agency, enhancing surveillance for new COVID-19 variants, and reviewing the ICPC Act to bolster anti-corruption efforts.
