The Nigerian House of Representatives has issued a directive for the immediate release of Alhaji Bello Badejo, the president of Miyetti Allah, who is currently detained by the Nigerian Army.
This decision follows a motion moved by Hon. Mansur Soro during a plenary session, highlighting concerns over Badejo's arrest and detention without due legal process.
Badejo was apprehended on December 9, in Maliya, Nasarawa State, by officers of the 177 Battalion in what has been described as a "commando-style operation."
The arrest reportedly stemmed from a dispute involving a retired military general and members of the local community.
However, the House of Representatives has condemned this action, stating that it bypasses the necessary legal procedures, such as a prior invitation or court injunction.
"The continued detention of Alhaji Bello Badejo without formal charges is a clear violation of his fundamental human rights," Hon. Soro asserted, referencing Sections 34, 35, and 36 of the Nigerian Constitution.
He further criticized the military's attempt to "usurp the role of the Nigerian Police and the courts" in civil matters.
In response to these events, the House has summoned the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Christopher Musa, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Olufemi Oloyede, along with the Commanding Officer of the 177 Battalion, to appear before the House Committees on Army, Human Rights, and Justice on December 20.
They are expected to provide explanations for the constitutional breaches associated with Badejo's detention.
