Reason I’m Excluded From Conversations About Best Musicians – Young Jonn

Prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry, Young Jonn has recently voiced his concerns about being overlooked in discussions regarding the best musicians in the country.

Despite his massive contributions to the music scene, particularly as a producer, Young Jonn feels that his transition from production to singing has not been fully recognized or appreciated by the industry and its critics.

In a candid expression of his frustrations, Young Jonn took to his social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter), to address this issue. He wrote, "I see how you all leave me out of conversations prolly cos I started out as a producer. Continue! Time will tell!"

Young Jonn's journey in the music industry began with his role as an in-house producer for YBNL Nation, where he gained prominence by producing hit songs for artists like Lil Kesh and Olamide.

His work during this period was instrumental in shaping the sound of contemporary Nigerian music, earning him a reputation as one of the top producers in the country. However, despite his success behind the scenes, Young Jonn felt a calling to step into the spotlight as a recording artist.

In pursuit of this new direction, Young Jonn signed an Artist Recording Agreement with Chocolate City, one of Nigeria's foremost record labels. This move marked a major transition in his career, allowing him to showcase his talents as a singer.

His first project under Chocolate City, "Love Is Not Enough," was released in April 2022, followed by his debut album, "Jiggy Forever," in 2024. These releases demonstrated his versatility and ability to create music that resonates with audiences beyond his production work.

Despite these achievements, Young Jonn continues to face challenges in gaining recognition as a top musician. He attributes this to the industry's tendency to pigeonhole him based on his production background. In various interviews and public statements, he has expressed his determination to prove himself as a formidable artist in his own right.

"Time will reveal those who are truly the best musicians," he asserted, emphasizing his belief that his talent and dedication will eventually earn him the recognition he deserves.

The issue of being overlooked is not unique to Young Jonn; it reflects a broader trend in the music industry where individuals who transition from one role to another often struggle to redefine their identity. For Young Jonn, this challenge is compounded by the fact that he never initially planned to become an artist. In a reflective moment, he shared, "I never planned to be an artiste, life played out."
